 Purusha sooktam:

Purusha sooktam is mentioned in the Vedas. In Vaideeka dharma there are two types of truths. They are: 1) shruti—all time truths, and 2)smritis—they change from time to time.

Shrutis are experienced by the meditating people, Rishis,  during their kriya yoga sadhana,  experienced practically, and then written by them. That is why, ‘vedani apaurusheyaani’, Vedas are not written by anybody as they please.  They are written by hearing from nowhere.

Purusha sooktam is mentioned in 16 slokas or verses  of the 10th mandalam, of  Rig Veda. Later it was mentioned in taittareeya aranyak of Krishna yajurveda, vaajasaneyi samhita of shukla yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvanaveda. Of course there were some small changes.

Purusha sooktam is the essence of shrutis as said by Vedavyasa in Mahabharata.  Saunaka, Aapastambha, boddhaayan, and etc Rishis also eulogised the greatness of Purusha sooktam.

In Purusha sooktam it was described about Adipurusha.  It will recognise Narayana, the form of Adipurusha. It will say, ‘Narayana is the root cause of Creation.  Adi Narayana is having infinite number of heads, eyes, and legs.  In short Adi Narayana only pervaded into everything. He is beyond everything. The whole Creation is ¼th part of His four parts.  The remaining three parts of Narayana are not manifested.
¼th part of Narayana is Aniruddha Narayana or Brahma i.e., the Creativity.  Adi Narayana asks Aniruddha Narayana to do one Yagna i.e., Suhrut yagna. In this Yagna the senses of Aniruddha Narayana are Devatas or celestial bodies. The senses themselves are Ritwiks. His body is Havis, the thing that is to be offered. His heart is the Mandir or altar. The offered food or Havis will be taken by Adi Narayana.  For this Yagna the body of Aniruddha Narayana is sacrificed. From that several living beings will be manifested.
In this Yagna, Aniruddha Narayana/Brahma/Creativity is to be sacrificed/offered. For this Creation Yagam is the Karma kaanda, the procedural ritual. Here ParaBrahma/Adinarayana was prayed. This was conducted by Aniruddha Narayana/ Brahma/Creativity, ¼th part of Para Brahma. The senses of Aniruddha Narayana/ Brahma/Creativity are the Ritwiks.  The senses are the Devatas. Sacrificial animal is Aniruddha Narayana/ Brahma/Creativity Himself/itself.  In nutshell this total Creation/Jagat  is ¼th part of ParaBrahma only.  So we come out of Parabrahman and again goes into Him.  This the message of Purushasooktam.

Vedaahametam purusham mahaantam
Aadityavarnam tamasha parastaat
Tameva vidwaanamruta iha bhavati
Naanyah panthaa vidyateyanaaya.

This Adi Purusha who is having the effulgence of infinite number of Suns, is beyond all ignorance. I had grasped this Truth in my heart.  Who so ever knows Him like this shall become immortal. There is no way other than this.

Purusha sooktam:

Om tachcham yoraa vruneemahe gaatum yagnaaya
gaatum yagna pataye daivee swastirastunah swastir
maanushebhyah oordhvam jigaatu bheshajam
sam no astu dwipade sam chatushpade
Om saantih saantih saantih

We are praying auspicious Adi Purusha. This yagna should be completed peacefully.  Devatas i.e., Senses may cooperate with me.  The senses may cooperate with all. This kingdom of Creation may spread length and breadth. Let these men may be benefited. Let these trees grow upwards. Let the two legged and four legged animals live peacefully.  All living beings may live peacefully.
Om saantih saantih saantih

Sahasra sheershaa purushah
sahasraaksha sahasrapaath
Sa bhoomim vishwato vrutwaa
atyatishta dashaamgulam
Parabrahman is having infinite number of heads, eyes, and feet etc., He has occupied the whole planet earth and remains ten inches excess. That means he is beyond Earth.
Parabrahman is Omni present, Omniscient, and Omni potent. He is in every tree, bird, hill, Hillock, mountain, river, Ocean, and in each and every living and non-living beings and beyond all these.

Purusha ye vedagum sarvam
Yadbhootam yachcham bhavyam
Utaamrutatwa shyeshaanah
yadannenati rohati

He is present tense, past tense, and future tense. He is all these tenses.

Yetaa vaanashya mahimaa
atho jaayaagushcha poorushah
paadoshya vishwa bhoothaani
tripaadashyaa mrutham divi

Such was his greatness. manifested creation is a mere only a part of him.  Rest three parts are not manifested.
Paramaatma can be attained by steadying the mind or by steadying the life force.  One is complement of other. Steadying the life force is called Pranayama in Kriya yoga parlance.  This world itself is a great yagna. This death-birth-death circle or Chakra bhramanam is a great yagna.
We have to live in Maya but should be intangible to Maya like a lotus in water. We do yagna/sacrifice, put Ghee into it as offerings/ahuti, and we get rains in its place.  We feed the cows with grass and fodder, and in return we get Milk. In this world give and take is a must. We all should live together mutually helping each other. The whole Creation has been made possible on this give and take basis.
Creation or Shrushti is of two types. They are Poorva Shrushti, and Uttara Shrushti.
Poorva Shrushti: Parabrahman has sacrificed a part of himself and in its place created this Universe. So God only is this universe, and its living and non living beings.
Uttara Shrushti: Parabrahman Himself became food and other products for the living beings.

Tripaadoordhwa uadaitpurushah
Paadosyeahaa bhavaathpunah
Tatho vishvan vyakraamath
Saasanaanashane abhi

The unmanifested raised above and the manifested Maya remained left behind. That Maya is this world. Then Parabrahman pervaded into all living and non living beings.

Tasmaad viraadajaayata

Poorva Shrushti:
From that Adi Purusha, Macrocosmos Virat Purusha, i.e., Cosmos has manifested.  Karya Brahma also manifested from Cosmos and he pervaded in and out of everything.  From Macrocosmos Virat Purusha, microcosmos Jeeva has been manifested. From then, Devats, earth, man kind, and animals, manifested.

Uttara Shrushti: Devataas or senses have done Yagna. The sacrificial animal is Viraat Purush. Spring has become Ghee (offering), summer has become fuel, and winter has become oblation.

The stage for yagnam is like this: The fencing or perimeter is bound by seven sticks, i.e., panch bhootas i.e., Aakash (ether), vaayu(air), agni(fire), water, and earth plus day and night.  They are denoting outer nature,
The sticks that are used for fuel in  this yagnam is 21 tatwaas.
They are: antahkarana i.e., man (mind), buddhi (intellect), chiththa (sphere of thinking), and ahamkar(ego),
plus five Tanmatras i.e., eyes (Roopam-seeing power), skin (Sparsha- feeling touch power), sound (Shabda—hearing power), & nose (Ghraana- smelling power) plus
Five karmendriyas  (organs of action) i.e., feet (movement), palms (skill), phallus (ananda), anus (elimination), and mouth (eating), plus
Five Pranas i.e., Praana, Apaana, Vyaana, Samaana, and Udaana, plus
Dharma and adharma, all these totalling 21 are internal nature.
These 21 items of internal nature are used as fuel.

Purusha, the first offspring of this Yagna, is sanctified by sprinkling sacred water on Him. He is called Kaarya Brahma. Later saadhyaas and Rishis have continued this Yagna.
The dwellers of Swarga or higher echelons are Devataas. Dwellers up above devataas are known as Vaikuntha vaasees.

When Purusha/Kaarya Brahma  was sacrificed,  what has  happened to his face, hands, laps, and feet?

Braahmanosya mukhamaaseeth
Baahoo raajanya krutah
Ooroo tadasyah yadwaishyah
padhbhyaagum shoodro ajaayatah

His face become Brahmin. Brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati. The man who had the wisdom of Brahma became Brahman.  His shoulders has become Kshatria, the man of courage. His laps has become Vaishya, the man with movement power. His feet has become shoodra, the man with skilful labour.

Chandramaa manaso jaatah
Chakshoh sooryo ajaayataha

Chandra came out of His mind, Soorya has come out of His eyes,  Indra and fire came out of His mouth, and life force has come out of His breath.

From navel antariksham (space), from head heaven, from feet earth, from ears dishaas (North East south and west) sides, came out.  Similarly all the worlds were manifested.

This Adipurusha who is having the effulgence of infinite number of Suns, is beyond all ignorance. I had grasped this Truth in my heart.  Who so ever knows Him like this shall become immortal. There is no way other than this.
All forms are His only. All different names are His only. Each and every thing is given by Him only.

Dhaataa purastyaadya mudaa jahaara

Tamevavidyaanamruta iha bhavathi
Naanyah panthaa ayanaaya vidyate

KaaryaBrahma has seen Para Brahman in the beginning,  and Indra has seen Him an all sides. Likewise the meditating man who sees Him as such, stock, barrel, and gun, shall get liberation in this birth here itself, and now itself.  There is no way for liberation other than this.

Yagnena yagna mayajanta devaah
Thaani dharmaani prathamaanyasan

This way Devataas i.e., senses have sacrificed Purusha for this Suhurut yagna..  i.e., dhyana(saadhana) dhyeyam(object) and dhyaani(sadhak) must become one.  So the meditating man must control his senses. This is the first Dharma. The people who have done this Yagna were living in higher echelons in space.

Adbhyah sambhootah pruthivyi rasaachcha
Vishwakarmanah samavarthataadi
Tashya twashtaa vidadha droopamethi
That purushasya vishva maajaana magre

This universe is made up of ether, air, fire, water, and earth by Vishwakarma, another aspect of Kaarya Brahma. Viswakarma is beyond Sun, Indra, and Devataas. That means He is beyond all Gnaanendriyas, Karmendriyas, and Antahkarana. Twashtaa means Sun displays his effulgence and make this dark world bright. This world which is illuminating with the effulgence of Sun is the alms given by ParaBrahman. Parabrahman only is pervading in and out of this world.

Sun is the husband of all living beings.  He is the cause of day and night.  He is the Soul of all. Para Brahman is expressing Himself in this universe in different forms. Men of wisdom make kriya yoga sadhana efforts to know Para Brahman. Prajapati is the initial Purusha. Mareechi and other Rishis attained that position.

Yo devebhya aathapathi
Yo devaanaam purohithah
Poorvo yo devebhyo jaathah
Namo ruchaaya braahmaye

Parabrahman is the effulgence giver to Devataas i.e., senses. He is Guru, preceptor, guide, and philosopher to the senses. He was there from the beginning. We must invoke Him. We salute to that Parabrahman.

Devataas have installed shuddha gnaana Brahma. He is the absolute truth. Those who gets shuddha gnaana, attains the designation of Parabrahma.  Such sadhak who has the wisdom of Brahma will have complete control over the Devataas i.e., senses.

Oh Parabrahman, Saraswati (pure wisdom), and Lakshmi (pure energy) are your concerts. Day (pure wisdom) and night (ignorant people) are your two sides. Aswanee devataas i.e stars are Your mouth.  Stars indicate Creation. Oh,  Parabrahman, please bestow me with pure wisdom. Please bestow me with immortality.
