Discourse 14
The Ascension of Man
– Lifting Up the Serpent in the Wilderness
Dialogue with
Nicodemus, Part II
Nicodemus answered
and said unto him, “How can these things be?”
Jesus answered and
said unto him, “Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, Verily, I say unto thee, we speak
that we know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If
I have told you earthly things, and believe not, how shall ye believe, if I
tell you of heavenly things?
“And no man hath
ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man
which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted
up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
--John 3:9—15
Nicodemus
answered and said unto him, “How can these things be?”
Jesus answered
and said unto him, “Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these
things? Verily, Verily, I say unto thee,
we speak that we o know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our
witness. If I have told you earthly things, and believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of
heavenly things? --John 3:9—12
Heavenly truths can
be known through intuition. This intuition comes through Spirit but not through
scriptural reading. A white gossamer
cloth from a distance looks like a ghost. The judgment given by senses and mind
may err. Jesus knew that his intuition
will not err so he said authoritatively: ‘we do know.’
Jesus who was
attuned to God the Father said to the Nicodemus: ‘I knew the souls on earth and how they can
enter into the kingdom of God.’
Jesus regretted the
ignorance of Nicodemus in regard to Christ state. He explained how could one experience this Christ
state. Everything in the universe is
saturated with God’s presence within, as the oil in the olives. Everybody is interested in this material
world instead of God. Every soul has
descended from causal, astral, and then to physical field. Similarly the soul
has to reascend to the ‘wilderness’ of interior silence by lifting up
the life force and consciousness from physical body to union with God.
“And no man
hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of
man which is in heaven. And as Moses
lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted
up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
--John 3:13—15
Every symbol has a
hidden meaning that must be rightly interpreted.
Serpent means man’s
consciousness and life force in the subtle coiled passageway at the base of the spine.
All the souls in the beginning were with God. Spirit projects the desire to create an
individualized expression of Itself. The
soul manifests and projects the idea of the body in causal form. The idea
becomes energy or astral body. It
condensed into the physical body. These three instrumental media is spinal
passageway. The soul descends and identifies with gross matter.
Jesus refers ‘he that came down from heaven’ to
the human body as ‘man’, physical body as ‘Son of the man’, and Christ Consciousness as ‘Son of God’.
The human body or earthly body cannot be accommodated
in corporeal forms. But all souls can
and will enter the supernal realms through death or through spiritual
transcendence. Then they will be angelic beings garbed in thought and
light. We are all made in the image of
God. Only devotion and continuous prayer
and scientific meditation can uplift the consciousness of God. The reading of books only will not help. Meditation is practice, and scriptural is
theory. One kilogram of practice is many times superior to several tons of
theory.
A mother can simultaneously do her house hold chores
while playing with her infant child. One can be united with God while
simultaneously active in this mundane world.
Jesus demonstrated this after his physical death. He dematerialized this body from rays of cosmic
creative light. Some masters may preserve this body indefinitely without any
decomposition whatsoever. The body of my
Guru, Paramahansa Sri Sri Yogananda did not decompose for several days.
Jesus was effectively engaged in the work of God the
Father while he was in Heaven. This is
highest state of Samadhi or ecstacy
called Nirvikapla Samadhi. The
devotee will not find any difference between external and internal state. The
potential to remain in heavenly consciousness regardless of outer circumstances.
In the
slightly lesser state called savikalpa Samadhi, the devotee shall be in trance
during his meditation. Jesus said: In essence every saint had a past and every
sinner had a future. That is what Jesus in his Gospels has emphasized that what
he attained can be attained by anybody with determination.
Jesus said that each son of man or bodily
consciousness must be lifted from senses to the astral kingdom. It must be done
by lifting up through the serpent-like coiled passage at the base of the spine.
The son of man is lifted up when this serpentine life force
is uplifted. Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness.
Man’s physical, astral, and causal are tied together
and work as one by a knotting of life force and consciousness in the seven
cerebrospinal centers in ascending order.
In descending order, the final tie is a coiled knot at
the base of the spine. It prevents the
ascension into the astral kingdom.
From the medulla, the intelligent life energy of the
astral energy flows to Sahasrara chakra and then flows downwards through
chakras. The serpentine force is called kundalini shakti. Sleeping kundalinee emanates outward into the
body and the world. It will enliven the
physical region of the senses i.e. sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, and
the earth-bound physical creative force of sex. It causes the consciousness to become
strongly identified with physical senses.
Jesus said: Whosoever lifts the body consciousness
(son of man) from the physical to astral by reversing the life force through
the coiled passage at the base of the spine will not perish. That sadhak will not be subjected to mortal
changes of life and death. He will
gradually acquire the immutable Christ Consciousness state, Son of God.
