Discourse 11
Water into wine: “The beginning of Miracles…..”
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, “They have no wine.”
Jesus saith unto her, “Women what I have to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.”
His mother saith unto the servants, “Whatever he saith unto you, do it.” And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.”
Jesus saith unto them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them upto the brim……And he saith unto them, "Draw out now and bear unto the governor of the feast.” And they bear it.
When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and men have well drunk, then which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.” This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
--John 2:1--11
Jesus used to see himself as ‘Spirit’ as such he used to address his mother as ‘woman’. Similarly Swami shankara used to see his transcendence as Spirit. All souls are “children of the most High”. (Psalms 82:6). We usually forget that we are the children of Divine Father and Mother, and impose limitations to limitless soul. God is the Divine potter. He has made this body with mortal clay and fashioned out of this temporary bodily dwelling places for father and mother and offspring alike.
During the marriage feast at Cana Jesus told his mother: “Woman, I cannot accede to your request just because you entreat me as a loving mother. It is God only who can appoint the time and the means through which He will manifest His glory through me.” By this Jesus does not mean any disrespect this mother Mary. Instead Mary wanted the servants to obey her son.
Jesus was intuitively guided by divine will. And as such he instantaneously changed the six large pots of water into wine. He was not intending to intoxicate the people by this conversion of water into wine but to demonstrate the God power. Spirit is the power that gives life and intelligence to matter. His disciples were surprised at his divine power. Jesus did this in accordance with the direction of God.
Thought is the subtlest vibration. It condenses into the light of life energy i.e., prana. It condenses into the gross vibrations of matter.
Through psychophysical techniques of yoga one can master his mind and can make it still.
Mighty tree emerging out of a seed, the planets revolving around Sun and rotating in their respective orbits, limitless worlds in infinite space, complex human body emerging out of a microscopic cell endowed with self conscious intelligence, everything is a miracle in this creation. In spite of this, man is oblivious of the presence of God. Because of maya he wanted some demonstrable proof of God’s presence before turning to God. Jesus expressed to Thomas: “Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”
God does not reveal Himself normally, but rarely. He reveals to some spiritually inclined people. Jesus is a saviour but he often refused to reveal his supernatural powers in spite of having a role to play in those dark ages. Jesus worked his miracles of healing, raising the dead, walking on the sea, for the sake of the true believers. He did it with the permission of God the Father.
Jesus had awakened from his Maya and became one with Christ consciousness. He could at will convert his materialize thoughts of stone into water or those of water into wine. Jesus could visualise the creation as projected thoughts of God. As Jesus was one with the Divine Mind, he could change one vibration into another.
