VA(Varishta)MANA(mind) i.e., fixed mind requires 3 feet,  one feet for Bali(sacrificing or controlling) of Physical disturbances, one feet for mental disturbances & third and last feet for spiritual disturbances. These disturbances r called MALA, VIKSHEPANA & AVARANA DOSHAS. The individual represents Earth. Serious sadhak should guard these three disturbances viz.,  PHYSICAL, MENTAL & SPIRITUAL  is d meaning behind Maha Vishnu in d Avatar of Vamana asking BALI  Chakravarti 3ft of land. In fact Varti or Vrutti means business of thoughts. They will be engulfing u round & round like a Circle(Chakra). When Sadhak is in deep meditation he will be observing a small  replica of his own viz., VAMAN (measuring upto his thumb or thumb nails or Angushtha Praman) in Astral form in between his eye brows(Kutastha). That means he has crossed Physical obstructions  like bodily problems(one feet of Bali is over). He could send them back  to Patal ( into himself). Now he has to overcome mental & spiritual obstructions like thoughts & thought processes so as to reach his goal of uniting with d SPIRIT. That means he has to go beyond Astral & Karana(Causal) bodies.
